Baddies – Do The Job

Some-hyped Southend postpunk types Baddies start debut ‘Do The Job’ in representative fashion with the shambling, volatile ‘Tiffany…I’m sorry’, kicking right into the lairy vocals and bouncy riffage, it’s hard and fast and it’s followed by more of the same.

A lack of variety works both ways on this self-released CD; every track is delivered with venom and found not wanting for head-nodding riffs, but it’s exhausting keeping up with the onslaught over the course of the LP and as a result there’s a lack of big, stand-out moments.

That said, what Baddies do they do very well, combining new and old influences to find a sound halfway between the post-punk-inspired indie of the Futureheads and the Young Knives and a sneering, Pistols-esque swagger, and often sounding a lot of fun for it.
