Gold Sounds – Home Schooled

How refreshing this EP is: pure, honest, untainted sound. No robotics, no unnecessary electronics, but classically memorable melodies with a healthy dose of individuality all make “Home Schooled” a thoroughly pleasant (but far from dull!) listen.

This band is able to use influence and inspiration from other great bands – “So It Goes” sounds like a mixture between Adam and the Ants’ “Kings of the Wild Frontier” and “Wonderful”, and with total success – and take familiar sounds that we all know and love, reshaping them into their own distinctly easy-going style. Particularly successful is “You’re A Vision”, which miraculously combines The Las with Handle’s “The Messiah”, although the excellent build at the end of the song never bursts which leaves it suspended in mid air, but this does little to dampen the exuberance of this ‘visionary’ song.

Oddly named “Sneinton Boulevard” seals the deal with a folky, free sound which is impossible not to smile at. “Only say you will stay with us”, asks the melody, and after the success of this EP I have no intention of leaving behind the golden sound of “Gold Sounds”.
