A Quick Chat With Aeroplane Flies High

We caught up with Scouse alt-rock trio Aeroplane Flies High ahead of their single launch tonight at Maguire’s Pizza Parlour in Liverpool to find out what makes them tick. Check it out here:

When we first started playing music…
Jack (vox & guitars) received his first guitar on his 10th birthday and from having a very music family picked the skill up right away, taking inspiration from Jimi Hendrix. Jack has been in many bands growing up, his first band being with Lew and they where called ‘Retrofuture’.

Lew (drums) used to go out with his dad who is a lorry driver, in his wagon, and listen to Nirvana and Sex Pistols, he has been drumming since he was seven and is obviously the best drummer in the world. Lew has been in bands for a long time also but never felt satisfied with the type of music he was playing until now.

Roanne (guitar) grew up on a mix of music, she used to make mixed tapes with her dad and grew up on the likes of Lush and Elastica, later to receive a surprise electric guitar and amp when she was 14. Roanne was only in one other band than AFH, that being Red Doll and The Machine, that ends right there.

The first time we met each other…
Jack (guitars&vox) knew Lew (drummer) since Primary school and were originally in their first band together. After becoming slight enemies they didn’t speak until they met again at a Melvins gig in Leeds 2011 where Roanne (guitarist) attended also with Jack. After rekindling their childhood friendship and discovering we all had the same music taste, something started to brew.

We knew we were on to something when…
Wherever we played gigs we had a real genuine reception from the crowd, we always stood out from the other bands and we where always much younger than most bands we played with.

Our biggest influences are…
‘Grunge’ is a boring reference, but it is true. We all love Nirvana, Melvins but we do have our own guilty/not so guilty pleasures. Jack is a massive fan of They Might Be Giants. Lew is a big fan of Aerosmith and lately Alice Cooper and Roanne loves Hole and spends most of her time defending Courtney Love. We would like to think our influences show in our music but we’re really trying to bring something new to the table.

We’re most proud of …
Our ‘Growing’ video, have you seen it? It’s so cool and dark and just what we wanted. There are plenty of things we are proud of it’s hard to pin point just one thing. We supported Japanese Voyeurs in 2010 and without that show we wouldn’t have got with Snaketown, so perhaps that?

Our ideal support slot would be with…
Foo Fighters? if we supported them we would instantly be like the next biggest band in the world right? Maybe not, but we all love/ are in love with Dave, he should love us!
We would say Nirvana, but that’s not going to happen.

One item we can’t live without on tour is…
We haven’t actually been on ‘tour’ yet but if three days count as a mini tour then we can’t live without a Tesco Meal Deal, that thing is a life saver, a sandwich or wrap, a drink and some crisps for £3, that’s pretty good. Then there’s all the sweets and other crap you buy and the Starbucks on the way….maybe we’re supposed to say earplugs?

We can’t stop listening to…
Well it differs really, when we do our mini tours or play far away gigs we always have an album each and we play rock paper scissors to decide the order or which the albums are played. Lew is really into Mac De Marco at the moment, Jack is really into Hot Snakes and Roanne is quite into Dum Dum Girls.

We’re not ashamed to admit that…
We all fart, and it gets really really bad sometimes.
