Earths – Blood Diary EP

Glasgow four piece indie band Earths have recently released the four track Blood Diary EP. The band has had a couple of past single releases and have played several gigs around the city of late. Their music is generally slow and melodic with a reflective, almost shoegaze, feel.

The four tracks on this EP give a good taste of the band’s approach. The four members – Jamie Cameron, Alastair Brian, Euan McPherson and Johnny White – combine well, giving a gentle and pleasing sound. Much of it is instrumental and multi layered, but the vocals are strong.

Opening track Body Parts builds from a slow guitar and vocals and more up-tempo bursts give the song a good energy. Familiar Echo is the lead single and perhaps the strongest track here. It has a downbeat feel, the twinkling guitar line evocative and the slightly distant sounding vocals in the chorus are striking.

Roundhouse opens with a more strident bust of guitar and drums before higher pitched vocals come in. The multiple textures work well here and it almost bleeds into the final track, We Will Kill Again. This one has a much simpler sound and the ever present feeling of melancholy is strong in a slow track full of regret that ends with a dramatic burst of organ and guitar.

Earths have a distinct sound that is far more subtle than many indie bands. There is deep feeling in their sound and the songwriting is excellent. This EP is available as a digital download and also on limited edition CD or cassette – yes cassette tapes.
