Delilah – From The Roots Up

Atlantic Records signed 21 year old singer/songwriter Delilah, and since then the Paris born musician has been building up her musical portfolio. She has toured with Chase & Status and of course briefly graced Prince’s tour with her presence, and now we’re finally getting to experience her debut album, The Roots Up.

Delilah, (whose real name is Paloma Stoecker) has shown a strong love for music from a young age, since then she has worked hard to get where she is. From the initial listen of the album it’s hard to pin it down into one particular genre, she seeps into a variety of fields but that’s no bad thing. If anything it gives her options for future releases, and means that her appeal will benefit more listeners. Without a doubt, those who are listening can enjoy music to suit the mood or setting – something which is often forgotten with commercial music today.

Tucked into this chilled album are a bundle of potential chart topping songs, along with the chart beauty that hit the airwaves, Go. The whole album oozes ambient electronic pop, unlike other albums this one keeps you guessing. With every listen the type of artist she wants to be portrayed as seems to morph, but she really does show such maturity for her age through her lyrics and sounds, putting her into many categories. You can especially hear and feel the sentiment in the song Insecure, and even though its full of powerful emotion, it still remains gentle. Her song Love You So, is a firm favourite, the great musical accompaniment teamed with her effortless emotive vocals, make it flawless. This seems to be the theme throughout the entire 12 tracks on the album.

When thinking of other artists to compare her to, the first one that springs to mind is Sia. Their vocal pitches and smooth ambient melodies are very similar but simply beautiful. Both artists have the same effect when you hear their tracks, and like Sia with her career, she’s collaborated with a wide range of artists from a variety of genres – we believe Delilah will do the same, if not better.

With this album so many songs soothe like a lullaby, yet grab you with the intensity. It’s exciting to know such a young artist is showing such growth in her music, and we think we really will see this girl bloom even more.
