The Godfrey Brothers have perhaps wisely managed to reunite with their original singer Skye Edwards for their most recent album. Having flirted with a few vocalists on previous releases and tours they have come full circle for this very sobering effort.
And it’s a case of old tricks are the best tricks as this is the Morcheeba of Big Calm that garnered them most of their critical and commercial success. To say that the band have no new tricks would be an insult – especially when their music is some of the most soothing you’ll likely to hear.
“Blood Like Lemonade” is like listening to an extension of what you already love about the band. That should paint a very realistic picture in mind for anyone’s anticipation.
The first single of the album is a true highlight. “Even though” shows that Skye still has an alluring voice as always and that the Brother’s Godfrey know how to charm an audience. “Even Though” ranks right up there with the best of their catalogue.
The song “Blood Like Lemonade” is perhaps most reminiscent of the Big Calm numbers like “Blindfold,” but this doesn’t make it any less likeable. And like Big Calm there is room for some Trip-Hop instrumental tracks in the guise of “Mandala.” They even go so far as to have a pretty acoustical song “I Am the Spring” which does them a lot of justice.
In fact the album is replete with a wide variety of numbers – but all the while being easily identifiable as Morcheeba. It’s a fine album that fans will go crazy over – and no doubt get them a few new fans in the process.
They will be touring later this year and even putting in an appearance at The Big Chill Festival this summer.
