1997 saw the release of Roni Sizes ‘NewForms’ LP, one of and perhaps the first breakthrough D’n’B masterpieces. The Mercury Prize winning, 5x Platinum selling album beat both the heavyweight Britpop crowd and any chart dominating dance to the award, enhancing the widespread appeal and importance of this strange, brave NewForm of music. So, can it still hold its own a decade later?
With new tracks added, including last months retrospective single ‘Don’t Hold Back’, any vitality lost with time has been reassuringly restored here on ‘NewForms 2’. Notably, ‘Brown Paper Bag’ still shines for me and so it should for you too, right? Fans can now replace their worn out copies and inquisitive D’n’B newcomers can get their hands on a surely safe bet. If it’s too fast and furious for ‘em, despite its many tranquil refrains, well they should try (my personal favourite D’n’B act) Lamb instead.
