In the unlikeliest of Christmas match-ups, ex-Arab Strap guitarist Malcolm Middleton plucks a realistic, but overall positive veined and striding power folk snippet from his roving and ranging third album ‘A Brighter Beat’. In order to jostle with X-Factor for that coveted Christmas number 1 spot.

By doing this he offers an honest, early The Proclaimers styled stomp that whilst sounding bleak, pushes out a “make the most of life whilst you’ve still got it” message. Resulting in a fuzzy guitar led strut, using female backing to cushion Malc’s harsh but fair comments to aid that Christmas reflection. This year there is an alternative to tinned, manufactured commercialism, will it be taken?
