With Euro 2004 almost upon us, the attention of football fans across the country is now fixed firmly on the England team’s forthcoming campaign for Euro glory in Portugal, which starts with the titanic clash against the current European Champions, France, on June 13th.

However, with the likes of Beckham, Owen, Lampard, Gerrard and Scholes all fighting fit for the feast of football that will unite the nation, England are rightly considered to be one of the tournament favourites.

England fans are the most passionate in the world and on June 7th Gut Records release ‘Come On England’, a song penned by fanatical England fan Steve Fox, a 30 year old office manager from Birmingham. “I came up with the idea to pen an England song during the last world Cup.“, Steve explains, “I was listening to Come on Eileen by Dexy's Midnight Runners at half-time during one of the England matches. It’s my family’s favourite song, as my late uncle did some drumming for Dexy’s in the early days. I thought, ‘how cool would it be if ‘Come On Eileen’ became ‘Come On England’. I just sat down and penned the new lyrics straight away!”

The past two years has seen Steve’s idea become a reality and, under the band name of 4-4-2, ‘Come on England’ is now one of the favourites to head the charge to be Top of The Pops.

Steve said, “We sent a demo of the song to EMI explaining what we wanted to do. They thought it was a good idea and gave me permission to use the music. I’ve also been given approval by Kevin Adams, who co-wrote the original, as well as Dexy’s singer Kevin Rowlands, who gave his support after reading about what we doing in the Birmingham Mail.”

Steve, whose favourite England player is David Beckham, then received a further boost when talkSPORT Radio – the UK’s largest commercial station – said they wanted to use the song as their official England anthem for Euro 2004. The talkSPORT presenters even ended up singing on the record with Steve and the rest of 4-4-2!

On the prospect of the single becoming number 1, Steve said, “It would be a dream come true, not only representing England and the fans, but for my late uncle. If he was alive today he would have been the drummer for 4-4-2.”

‘Come On England’ is also going to feature on an album called ‘Come On England – Football Songs For Football Fans’, which is released on June 14th, also on Gut Records. 4-4-2 will feature along side the likes of Oasis, Fatboy Slim, The England Supporters Band, Bell & Spurling and many, many more.
