Stone Roses DVD – Out 28th June
This brand new 2-disc release from Jive records is the first ever Stone Roses DVD, showcasing one of the most popular and influential bands of the late 80s/ 90s. This is a very special release full of classic videos, legendary performances and rare and exclusive behind the scenes footage. The first disc contains 6 promotional videos of all the Stone Roses’ biggest hits, including ‘Fools Gold’, ‘One Love’ and ‘Elephant Stone’. A bonus for all fans of the ‘Roses is the hour-long live recording of their Blackpool gig from 1989. This first disc of rare concert footage and classic videos features 5.1 sound and restored audio and has never before been available to buy on DVD.
The second disc in this release has 7 classic television performances by the band including their infamous live debut, on ‘The Late Show’ when a studio power cut kills their sound in the middle of “Made Of Stone.” The presenter’s discomfort, compounded by Ian Brown’s heckles of “amateurs,” is priceless. There is also a Top Of The Pops performance of “Fools Gold” and two live performances at the legendary Manchester club, the Hacienda. There is a full feature taken from Rapido’s archives, an exclusive and excruciating 20 minute interview with a monosyllabic John Squires and a defensive Ian Brown and, most interesting of all, rare and exclusive behind the scenes footage of the band relaxing and fooling around during breaks from recording their eponymous debut album in 1989.

Fried – Get Out of Jail – out 12th July
Widely tipped to be one of the UK’s big breakthrough acts this year, Fried are set to release their debut single ‘Get Out Of Jail’ on July 12th on London Records ahead of the September release of their debut album. Consisting of former Fine Young Cannibals songwriter David Steele and the outstandingly gifted 23-year old New Orleans vocalist Jonte Short, Fried’s ‘Get Out Of Jail’ has already received an overwhelmingly positive reaction with many listeners making favourable comparisons with Lauryn Hill and Macy Gray.
Steele discovered Short at the 2001 New Orleans Jazz Festival after a five-year search for a ‘mind-blowing’ singer and immediately knew she was right. “I’d been everywhere,” he says. “I saw a lot of OK people, but nobody I listened to and thought – ‘fucking hell’.” It’s now been eight years – eight years – since his role in Fine Young Cannibals. David is nothing if not exacting.
The music is unique. Jonte’s vocals would make a car melt – the songs are searing, soulful. But forget crappy Notting Hill pseudo funk, or corporate dance tunes predestined for some wanky car campaign. The feel is pure Motown, blues and real R&B, but it’s not retro; there is a contribution from RZA and a song co-written with Beth from Portishead. ‘In a way my ambition is almost done,’ says David. ‘What I wanted to do was make an amazing record, and we’ve done that.’
