Thursday, Jan 20th @ Jabez Clegg. £4, 8pm.
Top-notch purveyors of classic melodic rock, The Grain play their first gig of the year at Jabez Clegg this Thursday. Gaining acclaim and exposure on BBC GMR, Channel M and ALL FM despite having only been gigging six months, the band's rise to local prominence has been swift. But then that's no surprise given the individual members' talent and pedigree.
Formed from the ashes of Alone & Thermonic, these were bands who were signed to BMG, released a single through Dedicated and played gigs at Reading and Maine Road. The Grain have a craftsmanlike quality to their songwriting rarely seen in new bands, though in amongst the timeless melodies, there also lies a band unafraid to experiment. The best example of this is in 'Fork In The Road', a stunning intricate mix of drum loops, skanking guitar and psychedelic keyboards. The song also demonstrates the band's variety, with elements of folk, reggae and funk richly woven into their sound. To hear the familiarity of classic songwriting done with freshness and freedom, look no further than The Grain.
“The Grain formed with a belief that they still had something to offer the music world. Fork In The Road proves they were absolutely right. A dirty bass led piece of rock, it's an infectious and subtle little groover. The other two tracks on offer back up their theory. Movin On is restrained and measured with a top pop chorus, while Something To Say is one of those lilting, gentle ballads that Ocean Colour Scene were loved for. Give the Grain a string section and a skilled producer now!”
