Academy Unsigned Again – Bigger and Better

Bring back the rock. That’s what they say. Who? Who say that? Well me, my mum and erm, all my mates. Ahhh, come on Mat which mates? Ye know those mates that I err, ye know hang round with. Names? Bill. Bill… Car. Enough of this Alan Partridge paraphrasing – talk about the music.

Academy Unsigned returns for the second time this month to complete an October blockbuster. Performing are Day With Mary, Amphoteric, Codeca and Juvinilia – causing post emo riff core grunge, seasoned with punk cocktails and laced with rocket fuel and absinth. Loud init.

Day With Mary have it all. Tunes, style, riffs and legions of barmy army screaming girl fans. After playing around Liverpool, in various forms, for a couple of years and as well as the odd sprint across to Germany and Ireland and as well as the obligatory crawl up and down the country into shit holes near you on tour (70 gigs a year) and as well as winning the best unsigned act award in 2003 and as well as supporting the likes of Fightstar in 1200 capacity venues…. Well they are here and now the loudest and most popular band in Liverpool at the moment. People scratch their heads to wonder why they are unsigned – I do not have the answer.

Amphoteric. These are three unlikely lads of the student variety that have been playing together since tom browns school days. Punk rock with pop spin. Bags of tunes and energy transform mild mannered prefects into rock stars.

Codeca are barstools. They have youth and talent and all the weirdness that comes from being a muso at this tender age. I hate them. Fortunately their fans do not. It’s straight off the press emo with a hint of edge to it. Guaranteed shape throwing to follow.

Juvinilia are opening the proceedings and are a brand new band direct from the rehearsal room. Maybe not as raucous as the bands they are supporting, leaning towards stoner rock as their backbone, but a welcome crowd warmer to say the least.
