ONE-IN-FOUR GOES TO THE CAPITAL

Top Scottish bands, including MOGWAI, ARAB STRAP* and KING BISCUIT TIME (Steve Mason, ex-Beta Band), will perform in a series of intimate gigs across Edinburgh, as part of SAMH’s One In Four music festival. Cabaret Voltaire, The Caves and Club Ego will play host to over 20 bands and DJ sets when One In Four heads to the nation’s capital for the first time from 23 – 30 November.

The One In Four festival has been running in Glasgow since 2001 and has attracted the support of well-known bands like Teenage Fanclub, Snow Patrol and Goldfrapp. This year’s festival sees IDLEWILD & EVOL (providing DJ sets), THE FENCE COLLECTIVE, THE ZEPHYRS, 1990s, and others, coming together to promote mental health awareness and to raise funds for the Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH).

One In Four takes its name from the statistic that one in four of us will experience mental health problems at some point in our lives. Music is a great way of bringing mental health issues into the public domain, and addressing the stigma and discrimination attached to mental health problems.

The festival has generated a huge amount of interest and the Mogwai gig on Monday 28 November at Cabaret Voltaire has already sold out.

Shona Neil, Chief Executive of SAMH commented:
“We have been fortunate to secure support from many Scottish and UK musicians, who have used music to raise awareness of mental health and to break down the barriers faced by those of us who experience mental health problems.”

Steve Mason, of King Biscuit Time, talks from personal experience:
“Its time to drop the stigma surrounding mental health, help people to feel understood and give them the help and support they need, because if you yourself aren’t suffering, then someone close to you is. That’s why I'm supporting One In Four.”

Noreen Devine, Events and Arts Officer at SAMH thanked all who have supported One In Four over the years:
“We have been overwhelmed by the support offered by Scotland’s music community. So many bands wanted to be involved in this year’s festival. We have been very lucky in previous years in Glasgow as we’ve had the support of so many venues, bands and promoters and have had an army of volunteers to help. By moving the gigs to Edinburgh this year, we hope to reach even more people with the One In Four message and hope that One In Four will continue to grow.”

This year’s One In Four festival has been made possible with assistance from Health In Mind, an Edinburgh-based mental health charity, Cabaret Voltaire and the Scottish Executive.
