While preparing to release new album, “Vision Valley”, The Vines talk us through the inspiration and recording process behind each track…
ANYSOUND
HAMISH
“Anysound” was probably the first song on the album that we recorded.
And we did way back in May 2005, anyway I never heard the song before we recorded it on that day and we recorded about five takes of it. And we tried to record it again later in about October. Couldn't beat the original demo. It wasn't quite a demo, it was a good recording. So, went back to the original recording and used that. It was unbeatable.
NOTHIN'S COMIN'
CONNOLLY
Yes, this is the Velvet Studios where we commenced the demo sessions in May of last year. Recorded 7 songs. In fact the first two songs from the album are from the original sessions.
VISION VALLEY
NICHOLLS
It's a ballad that song. We have strings on it and it's, uh–
GRIFFITHS
First time with strings.
NICHOLLS
Yeah. strings. And, um, yeah, we're happy with the way it turned out.
So, yeah, very much acoustic. And, it's very laid back . . . very
peaceful song.
GROSS OUT
NICHOLLS
There we have rock song “Gross Out.” It's the fastest one, the shortest
one, and it's very simple. And, it's kind of the vocals kind of scream
on the song. And it's like a punk song I guess. Yeah, happy with the way
it turned out.
HAMISH
When we're trying to get the track listing in the order of the songs for
the album. “Gross Out” was the song no matter where it went in the album it just leaps out at speed of about 100 miles an hour.
GRIFFITHS
Yeah, it's one of my favorites. Just 'cause it's cool and it's heavy and
loud and it's a good balance. As far as like songs like “Vision Valley”
and that. It's just, I don't know. I don't know, it's what I'd like to
hear, I suppose.
GOING GONE
HAMISH
And here it is in all its glory, full band version. Strings, piano and
the works.
NICHOLLS
It was cool to hear that one with strings.
GRIFFITHS
Yeah.
NICHOLLS
We'd been so familiar with that one in particular. Really come to life.
Yeah.
CONNOLLY
Yeah, the other stuff has got a psychedelic feel to it. I guess it's a
little, in some ways retro but really modern.
DON'T LISTEN TO THE RADIO
NICHOLLS
That's like a rock song. Like a kind of pop song. It's kind of funny I
guess, the lyrics to it. Uh, yeah, and the title as well.
FUTURETARDED
CONNOLLY
The song Futuretarded, we've never gone back to it from the original
session. It's basically a mix of what we recorded at the demo session.
Two takes of vocals and a bunch of percussion on top of the live band
track.
GRIFFITHS
That is a kind of a tribal sounding song. It's, uh, — with futuristic
lyrics I guess, or just poetic, or got this beat to it. There's spoken
word in there as well. So, uh, yeah, it's interesting, it's kind of a
different song.
HAMISH
Futuretarded almost didn't make the album but, um, we were talking last
minute and it was the right decision to put it in.
SPACESHIP
CONNOLLY
Spaceship's probably the one I initially felt. And Craig played it to me
on acoustic and I loved it. And hearing it with the band I was, I was
thinking it was the one that needed the most work. Possibly that's why
it took the longest but now I love it so.
NICHOLLS
That one, 6-minute epic. It goes through a lot of different stages and
it's like — it starts out very mellow acoustic and it ends up space
rock. So, uh, that's the longest song we've got for this album and it's
pretty interesting I think.
