We’ve piled the launch night with talent and first into the melting pot are Room One headliners, The Mystery Jets. They made the breakthrough this year and 2007 looks set to see them go stratospheric. They’ve already got a devoted army of fans and it’s only going to get bigger, so sign up early for a tour of duty.
If that’s not enough – and at Chalk we’re never satisfied with one big name – the sensational Hot Chip will be treating all you lucky, lucky people to a DJ set. You’ll know them from ‘Over and Over’ and the boys have fitted us in around recording their new album and treating the Aussies to a little culture at the Big Day Out. We still can’t believe we managed to snag them, but for the love of god don’t miss out on catching them DJ.
We’ve also managed to snare Nadia Ksabia from ‘And Did We Mention Our Disco?’ and she’s promising ‘mixed up music for independent human beings’. Which is not really the kind of statement you want to argue with. And with the January transfer window swinging open we’ve brought in Trash resident ‘The Lovely Jonjo’ on a loan deal. While topping and tailing the action will be your friend and ours ‘Matthew!WOWOW!’. We reckon he’s the kind of chap to become part of the furniture at Chalk and we dare you not to dance to his mixes. Indeed 100 brave volunteers stepped forward to face just such a challenge and not one could resist. Now, either St Vitus’ Dance is making a comeback or we’ve found our boy. You can try for yourself on his myspace page you’ll be back muttering ‘Yeah ok, you were right’, you mark our words. Now we know how much you like to impress your army of friends.
So Room Two is just the place for you. Your jaw will ache from repeating: “Oh yeah, I know them, yeah, saw them at Chalk before they got big.” We really are that good. Headlining we’ve got Jack Penate (stretch your vowels people, it’s pronounced Pen-ya-tay). He’ll be basking in the acclaim for his debut single “Second Minute or Hour”, it’s out on Young Turks Recordings and you can trust us when we tell you he’s absolute gold.
Next up on the ‘I saw them before you, because I’m cooler than you’ list are Cajun Dance Party. They’re a bunch of local indie pop scamps (if you’re reading this lads, we’re not paying your cab fare, you only live up the road) and they’d even put a smile on the face of the much-lamented Pauline Fowler. How Martin could lie to her like that we’ll never know, but forget about that, CDP are going to be huge and we got there first. So can you.
The Bishops are next up and you’ll no doubt know they’re building a solid reputation with their early-60s influenced sound. Their suits are so sharp, they’re plainly strangers to the Big Red Building on Golders Green Road and they’re the perfect group to play when your Old Man’s banging on about how ‘they don’t make music like they used to’. Because they do. But they do it better.
Delving into his big box of Phil Collins and Roxette seven inchers, we’ve got that nice young lad Farris Rotter. When he’s not playing in The Horrors, he’s being tutted at by old ladies, but it turns out he’s also a damn fine disc jockey to boot.
And somehow we’ve also crowbarred in Olive and Major Matt – they’re the White Heat DJs and they blow the roof off at Madame JoJo’s every Wednesday night. If you’re not utterly spent by now, there’s also Room Three to tickle your fancy. We’ve got DJ sets from uber label and future England members The Young Turks. There really is nothing these boys can’t do. So any DIY problems or essays you need finishing, bring them on down and the lads’ll sort them out. Nae bother wee man. And then there’s The Whore Moans. When they told their grannies the name of their new group they remarked: “That’s nice dear”. And they are, indeed, nice. They rock, we love ‘em and that’s end of the matter. Now that, my friends, is a monster line-up. Not bad for just eight and one half of your Lahndan Paaaands, now is it. Now if you could only see next week’s line up………….
