Shockwaves NME AWARDS 2007 Winners

BEST OF BRITISH!

UK TALENT TAKES THE TITLES AS BRITISH BANDS PROVE HEAVYWEIGHTS OF THE SHOCKWAVES NME AWARDS 2007!

The fight is now over and the British flag is flying high following an almighty win for bands from all across the UK. As the bell rung after the final round of the Shockwaves NME Awards 2007, it was the best of British standing proud at the Hammersmith Palais, where even the newcomers proved themselves to be heavyweights.

The Killers and My Chemical Romance put up a good fight for the US, walking away with awards for Best Music Video and Best International Band respectively, but the Shockwaves NME Awards 2007 was the Young British Awards with The View, Jamie T, Klaxons and Arctic Monkeys all named as winners.

Bursting with pride, south-west London newcomer Jamie T beat Britpop legend Jarvis Cocker, Lily Allen, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly and Thom Yorke, to pick up the award for Best Solo Artist.

Next up were The View, who took the Best Track award for ‘Wasted Little DJs’. Following their meteoric rise to fame, The View have undoubtedly made their mark on the music scene and last night they were left gobsmacked after beating off competition from The Killers, Dirty Pretty Things, Klaxons and Muse.

Fresh from their success on the Shockwaves NME Awards Indie Rave Tour, Brighton-based boys Klaxons had another reason to celebrate as they walked away with the Best New Band award.

Proving that NME is the most accurate predictor of bands that will hit the big time, Arctic Monkeys scooped two awards, following on from their three last year. Winning one of the most coveted categories of the night, the Best Album award for ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not’, and triumphing in the Best Music DVD category for ‘Scummy Man’, Sheffield’s finest foursome were the only multiple winners of the night.

Alongside Babyshambles, Kasabian and Oasis, Arctic Monkeys were also up for the Best British Band award, but it was the mighty Muse who took it home.

The Best Live Band award is without doubt one of the most sought after, and it was Leicestershire lads Kasabian who walked away the winners. Giving an electric performance on the night, these four lads proved why they are one of the biggest success stories of the year.

This year’s highest accolade, the Godlike Genius Award, went to one of the most successful, important and influential bands of our time… Primal Scream. The band closed the Shockwaves NME Awards 2007 with a blistering live performance of The Clash’s ‘White Man In Hammersmith Palais’, an apt finale as the curtain closed on the legendary Hammersmith Palais forever.

With more amazing live performances on the night from The Killers, Kasabian, Kaiser Chiefs, The View and a stunning collaboration from Jarvis Cocker and lady of the moment Beth Ditto from The Gossip, the Shockwaves NME Awards 2007 was the best yet.

Over 40 bands packed into the Hammersmith Palais to watch all the action at the biggest rock’n’roll event of the year. NME is always the first for new music and the first to reward it, leaving other award ceremonies trailing behind.

NME editor Conor McNicholas said: “This is the verdict of the real passionate British music fans, the ones who keep the music scene alive at gigs up and down the country week-in and week-out. It's a reflection of how strong the British music scene is that there's so much to be celebrated. The NME Awards this year has been the biggest of the modern age with an unprecedented number of bands attending and with a line-up to rival most festivals. It's been a triumph for the bands and NME alike.”
