To coincide with what would have been arguably the best jazz singer of all time’s 90th birthday, Universal release the ‘Ultimate Collection’ of Ella Fitzgerald songs.
There’s no denying the simple effectiveness of Fitzgerald’s voice, it sounds almost perfect word for word, and its easy to tell it’s hardly been touched by the production that plagues modern pop recordings. Her vocal range is wide and whoever has put together this album has made sure it is fully appreciated.
Fitzgerald has influenced some of the most popular artists of our time, including Amy Winehouse and some of the artists could take a lesson in simply having a great voice and being able to pull it off live. A great collection for any Ella Fitzgerald fan, and an even better starting point for anyone wanting to get into the great jazz singer’s work.
