If you’ve had your ear anywhere near to the ground recently, you will be aware of the NME-sponsored campaign for The Horrors, unfortunately for them, it was a campaign based on style rather than substance. And it’s about to come round and bite them on their skinny jeans arses.
You see, the latest single by The Horrors is a perfect example of a band trying to stretch their sound too far, but as the old saying goes, if you stretch something too far, it tears. They’ve never pushed any new boundaries, taking garage rock and giving a modern platform is something Jack White has been peddling for years now. But, with the older Horrors releases (in particular, ‘Count In Fives’) the band had tapped into a primal speed, even if the vocals get annoying and, frankly monotone.
If they’re to prove they are more than the hype, they’re going to need some better tunes, because this one plods along uneventfully without any real substance. And like anything built on sand, they could find themselves sinking very fast.
