A very admirable cause, but is the song itself something to be admired? Does it do justice to the man who originally wrote it?
It’s not just a by-number cover of the John Lennon original; the theatrics they found in their recent (2004, so not that recent I suppose) album have been applied sufficiently. But it’s a bit dry. Billie Joe definitely isn’t channeling Lennon, but he sounds like he means it for the most part. The main issue with this is that it lacks the raw passion of the original, Green Day are so disconnected with the song’s original meaning that it just doesn’t any affect.
It’s nice enough, but enough covers and duets with U2…where’s the follow-up to ‘American Idiot’?
