Liverpool has been announced to hold the 2008 MTV music awards at the Echo Stadium scheduled for November 6th, 2008.
This will be the third time that the event has been held in the U.K, following London in 1996 and Edinburgh in 2003.
Mr. Godfrey, the events executive producer and MTV networks senior vice president added that, “It was only natural” That Liverpool should host the event, due to the European capital of culture 2008. Liverpool’s Culture Company which is planning the city of culture celebrations made the bid to bring the 15th awards ceremony to the city.
Liverpool is known for its strong musical heritage, most notably with The Beatles, among other acts such as Gerry and the Pacemakers, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, the Christians, Echo and the Bunnymen, Cast, The Boo Radleys and Atomic Kitten, including current acts Spice Girl Melanie Chisholm, the Zutons and Candie Payne.
Chairman Bryan Gray declared “its pop music coming home. There was huge competition to stage these awards, so this is a major coup for Liverpool.” “This event and the plans we have to celebrate them will provide a huge international platform for the city, the arena and the music scene in Liverpool today.”
The Echo Stadium, situated at the Kings Docks is due open January 2008 as part of a £146m development. It has been quoted as one of the most environmentally-friendly venues of its kind throughout Europe.
Liverpool City Council leader Warren Bradley said it was a “watershed in Liverpool's return to the world stage”. “With being European Capital of Culture, the city has rediscovered the confidence and ability to attract the world's best,” he added.
Munich's Olympia Halle hosts this year's show, which is to take place this Thursday, 1st November.
