Sia Interview

Ozzie ‘Sheila’ Sia Kate Isobelle Furler, AKA Sia, is perhaps better known for her big involvement with Zero 7 as opposed to her 2 solo LPs or Crisp, her Australian acid jazz formation, which also released 2 largely unnoticed LPs. A decade into the game and here, after the Nov ’07 release of her EP ‘Day Too Soon’, we find her on the verge of releasing her 4th LP ‘Some People Have Real Problems’ (Jan ’08).

Caught somewhere between Lauren Hill and Tori Amos, Sia sings soulfully and well, wonderfully. Interaction with the likes of Beck, Wookie, Radiohead cover LPs and the superb TV show 6’ Under gained Sia a little more recognition still. But now, with Glasswerk and Sia crossing paths like this, it seems only right that this threshold upon which we find ourselves should also act as her launch pad to, to infinity and all that! Sia thankfully took time out to answer a few questions…

AS: Why the abrupt name Sia as opposed to the commonplace crazy stage name?
S: Erm… it's my name, like on my passport and my birth certificate.

AS: What inspired the LP title?
S: it's a note to self that when we’re all complaining about our rich people's problems like a bitter latte or shitty traffic, there are people with no rice or maybe a lung missing who aren't complaining, if you get me.

AS: How did your career come about?
S: I lied to an ex boyfriend about being a singer and faked my way into a band.

AS: Who would you most like to collaborate with?
S: Chunky Pam or Elvis.

AS: What does 2008 hold for you?
S: A lot of work, a lot of love and some speed dancing.

AS: Where do you go when it all gets too much?
S: The Qi Gong Tui Na massage place on grand between Lafayette and Broadway, Soho, New York or to bed for a cry, the latter is cheaper.

AS: When you aim your peashooter/pellet gun/sniper rifle, you’re aiming at?
S: Meanies and rudies, judgers and haters.

AS: Where’s the place to be?
S: In my pocket.

AS: What is it that makes the world go round?
S: Love and glove. Glove love.

AS: What’s your weak point?
S: Not having information. As long as I have the information I can function.

AS: What’s your favourite instrument?
S: Bass guitar.

AS: Cheers Sia
S: Anytime.
