Elle S’Appelle – Liverpool Carling Academy

Elle S’Appelle will soon be releasing their EP in late March, so the gig in Liverpool before the Boss Pop tour was a way for the band to showcase their new songs. The band played Carling Academy, and when we arrived there must have been forty people watching the support band, a kind-of-catchy-yet-still-reminiscent-of-Revenue-from-Mobile-Act-Unsigned, yet when Elle S’Appelle took to the stage 200 people must have been crammed in, trying to get to the front.

As ever with Elle S’Appelle, the quality of music is consistently high, with sweet melodies and catchy choruses. Mariappa got everyone in the crowd dancing, from the friends at the very front to the people waiting for watered-down beer at the bar. The note and word perfect performance really got the audience going, twirling their partners and singing along.

Another thing that you don’t always get with bands that have been hyped and are about to hit big time- Elle S’Appelle make their gigs fun for the audience. The band themselves have private jokes and giggle at certain points in the songs, Elle S’Appelle also try and have conversations with the audience, asking them what they think about Susan in Neighbours and dedicating songs to certain people.

An excellent gig and a brilliant return to Liverpool for their first gig in the home city before embarking on a national tour. Check out their ace new songs on Elle S’Appelle’s Myspace: Reasons Your Reasons Your Reasons and the ska themed Monkeyshine.
