Being described as unusual, you would think that this Go:Audio EP would be unique and different. However, it is anything but.
‘Woodchuck’, Go:Audio’s debut single, is standard pop-punk. It is simply verse bridge chorus repeated throughout the whole song the same as any pop-punk song. It has elements of Hooberstank’s ‘Too Little Too Late’ and ‘Waiting for You’ by Allister, unfortunately though ‘Woodchuck’ as a whole simply sounds as though it has been written by Busted. Even the lyrics, such as, ‘slow it down your 21/ I’m not what you need/ it was only a bit of fun’ are straight-forward, meaningless and conventional like any other pop-punk record.
The two slow songs featured are ‘Forget About It’ and ‘Doesn’t Really Matter’. Both songs are melodic enough that you would be prepared to get your lighter out and sway, yet neither of them are actually very exciting. ‘Forget About It’ is dreary and emotional with a touch of electro half way through, the electro does not fit with the simple slow pop song and just sounds as if it has been added for the sake of attempting to make it sound different. While ‘Doesn’t Really Matter’ sounds like it is derivative from Young Love’s ‘Find a New Way to Dance’ with its use of electro intertwined within the vocals and the beat. It is far stronger and more appealing than ‘Forget About it’ with a drum beat added that creates a heart beat which develops a more romantic feel to it.
The one song that actually does do the band some justice is ‘So Quiet You Were’. It is fun and lively and really makes you want to get up and dance. Unlike other Go:Audio tracks, the electro element sounds as though its meant to be there and the song as a whole is a fusion of Young Love ‘s electro and Something Corporate’s punk rock.
