Fanny Grace – Rise & Shine

Fanny Grace consists of Guitarist Paul Reeves and Singer Carmen Mejia. Together they have been making music for 12 years. However they consider ‘Rise & Shine’ to be their virgin break into the Country contingent.

Fanny Grace certainly have some high profile advocats of their work including Willie Nelson and Don Williams. Due to their eclectic mix of styles and crossovers they have supported artists such as Joan Jett and Steve Miller.

One thing you have to say about country is it’s lack of offensiveness. Whatever the sentiments of some of FG’s lyrics the mood of the music prevents the listener from having to endure a thankless heed of an experience. A combination of mandolins, banjos and a Wonder Stuff circa ‘never loved Elvis’ era fiddle keeps the sound brisk albeit sticking to the staple country format. On the flipside FG’s rock roots do show through at times to prevent a lapse into snoozeville.

‘My cowboy’s last ride’ was originally written by the late great Johnny Cash which he penned over 30 years ago but never conspired to bring in a suitable female vocalist. FG were right place right time to lift this ditty and subsequently pull off what is lyrically heartfelt, personal and overwhelmingly sincere.

Generally the songs paint a picture of the lives and times of Paul and Carmen. Stories of harmony (‘Get Along’ / ‘Counting on Love’); humanity (I’m forgiving you); sibling anecdotes (Time) and trouble free times (‘Ride it till the wheels come off’). The songs are generally finely honed and crafted and much more authentic than the overblown bluster than Twain puts out!

Produced by John Carter Cash this collection isnt a ground breaking experience but what it lacks in originality it brings back with a potful of charm in abundance.

Less Grace, more Fan…… Nah, this is just fine!!
