Against Me! – Stop

Against Me! are currently receiving excellent press, including rave reviews from SPIN, Kerrang and Rolling Stone. You would think then, that new single ‘Stop!’ would be excellent.

It’s not.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not bad, but it’s not great either. The track mixes Franz Ferdinand style drum beats with layered guitars and a vocal style clearly reminiscent of Dave Grohl. Opening with the chorus, it starts as it means to go on. Repeating, over and over and over again. Against Me! have obviously realised that they’ve hit upon a catchy lyric and performed a truly school boy error – they do it to death for two minutes, until the song is beaten into a state of utter tedium.

The verses offer no relief either, featuring all the same musical aspects of the chorus but also including lyrics that describe how they might rise to fame. This culminates in an equally dull B-section that states how they would shove said fame ‘right in their fucking faces’.

Let’s hope it’s not their strongest album track.
