To date Black Kids have performed on Later… with Jools Holland, toured with Kate Nash and had Rolling Stone hail them as one of the top ten bands of 2008. Later this year the band will be performing at Glastonbury and if you want my advice DO NOT MISS THEM!
The single ‘I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You’ comes with two b-sides. All three tracks have an individual style; Black Kids manage to create a subtle shift between genres not enough to alienate any listeners but just enough to keep it interesting.
‘I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You’ is a great track, an instantly lovable classic indie tune. The b- side ‘You Turn Me On’, continues in a different vein vocals are a little darker sounding, but it has a twist of electro that keeps it bouncing along. The second b-side comes in the form of a cover of Sophie. B. Hawkins’ ‘Damn, I wish I was Your Lover’. Now, I’m always worried about bands doing covers because too be fair they’re usually shit- unless you’re Sonic Youth coving Madonna’s ‘Get Into The Groove’, but Black Kids have now joined the elite group of good covers. Now I admit (unashamedly) that I liked the original, although in my defence, it was 17 years ago and I was young I didn’t know any better Anyway it’s a great cover, it’s like Soft Cell temporarily high-jacked Black Kids adding a bit of a fun sleazy feel to the sound.
The single is produced by Bernard Butler and currently the band are holed up in a studio with the man himself working on the debut album, which (going by the three tracks on the single) will no doubt will be brilliant.
