Cut Copy – In Ghost Colours

Over the years, Australia has struggled to produce many bands of top quality. In fact, make that many bands of half-decent quality (and if you include Pendulum or the Minogue sisters in either category, you need to take a look at yourself).Following on from AC/DC, INXS and Jet in ability -if not genre – come Melbourne trio Cut Copy. On their second album, In Ghost Colours, they produce a rare thing: an indie-dance crossover effort that actually works.

Cut Copy’s influences are wonderfully diverse, ranging from the commercial 80s electronic of New Order to the timeless psychedelia of The Flaming Lips, and these elements are blended to great effect on a brilliantly versatile album.

While the music may be catchy, it is by no means irritating – a difficult achievement on an album so reliant on electronic beats and commercial choruses. Stand-out tracks include opener Feel the Love and the lively Unforgettable Season, but there are no particularly weak tracks. In Ghost Colours is one of those records you can listen to regardless of what mood you are in, and – while you may not be able to pinpoint why – you will always enjoy it.
