“If I’m still a tele-marketer next year I think I’ll kill myself” sings Steve Mathieson, lead singer of the Collapsing Cities, but on the strength of this their first single he’ll be far too busy performing on the festival circuit.
A strong bass line and an infectious chorus reminiscent of The Enemy are transformed by cheeky, intelligent and fun lyrics. The B-Side, All Your Friends are Rats, shows they’re not quite the finished article and compared to the single sounds a bit clumsy and lyrically weak, but Collapsing Cities are definitely worth checking out. I suggest Reading in 2009.
