The Tides – Routine Life

The Tides, the latest quintet birthed from the Northern city of culture (no, not Liverpool) has all the hallmarks of a great up and coming band. Like their fellow Mancunians Doves and Elbow, The Tides utilise sweeping soundscapes, energetic yet controlled rhythms and rising choruses in their double a-side release: Routine Life & Friendly Fire.

Liam Pennington holds a very distinctive vocal style and delivery (much like Jimi Goodwin and Guy Garvey); think of it as a combination of the wail and whine of Brian Molko with the delivery of early Matt Bellamy. However you describe his style, it works but in no way does it define, dilute or overpower the musical credentials of the remaining ‘Tides.

Strong, consistent and so much better than the majority of the bands of the moment who appear to have heard nothing other than The Libertines; The Tides deserve your attention and with only a few listens will no doubt earn your respect.
