Proof that you need more than the raw materials to produce a good single. The Blakes’ new single has a Libertines-esque intro and a strong vocal, but it has a weak chorus and lacks any kind of spark to set it apart from most of the current indie crop. There is nothing that grabs you, and all things considered ‘Don’t Want That Now’ doesn’t really go anywhere.
This is a shame, as b-side ‘Village Green’ shows a far greater maturity and indicates that the band has in fact had a decent musical education. Located somewhere between Oasis and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, the b-side shows a depth so absent from ‘Don’t Want That Now’ that one finds it hard to believe that both tracks are by the same band.
