Having embedded themselves firmly within the public consciousness of their native Scotland, Sergeant are back and ready to take on the rest of the UK with their perfectly crafted pop songs. With 2 sold out singles to date- ‘K-Ok’, heralded by NME as ‘the most perfect pop anthem we can imagine being penned’ and the Scotland-only limited release ‘Swings & Roundabouts EP’ featuring ‘Sunshine’, one of the Guardian Guide’s ‘Anthems of the Summer’ – Glenrothes’ favourite sons are about to start 2009 with a bang.
Their 3rd limited edition 7” single to be released on Another Music = Another Kitchen Records, and the first to be made available digitally, ‘Swiftly Does It’ follows on from what was an eventful and impressive first year for the cheeky foursome. Only months into their record deal with Mercury, they requested to be freed from their contract before releasing any material, citing a lack of commitment from the large-roster label. With their new-found independence the band went from strength to strength, finishing work on their debut album- recorded at Rockfield, Rak and Abbey Road studios with legendary producer John Leckie (Stone Roses, Radiohead, The Verve)- and securing more illustrious support tours; having toured with Supergrass and Pigeon Detectives in summer 08, Sergeant went on to support the The Fratellis on their UK-wide end of year tour, and at the request of Noel Gallagher were also main support for Oasis on all their winter Scottish arena dates.
Alan McGee was quick to herald the band as the ‘saviours of Scottish music’ in his Guardian Blog, and proclaimed “Sergeant – together with Glasvegas – are the sounds of young Scotland today”; having just played two sold out headline shows north of the border- at Glasgow’s King Tuts on Hogmanay and Dundee’s1000 capacity Fat Sam’s two days earlier, a show with fanatical scenes featured in the promo video for ‘Swiftly Does It’- he may have a point.
