The Words – All The Roads

Slick Mancunian indie has been creating a local stir and The Words are well drilled, if a little predictable. This four track EP coasts along on a groove of mid-tempo rhythm and low key, blues pop hued vocals, provided courtesy of Ste Draper. His vocals rap around the tuneful, yet a little uninspiring churning 80s indie rooted guitars.

‘Time’, stands out for its atmospheric implants and heavier, big sounding stroke not dissimilar to The Dead 60s. Although the vocals are almost drowned out by the accompaniment and seeing as The Words are unsurprisingly making a name for themselves based on their lyrical pounce, it is something they may look to work on before playing their next showcase in front of the likes of EMI.

Striding ballad, ‘Holding up the Walls’ is illuminated by its pleading pull and Draper’s downtrodden approach suits the lyrics and it is certainly a high point. However, in this ever deep sea of wannabe indie bands one standout track ain’t gonna keep you afloat.
