Mongrel, for me are one of my best finds in the last 12 months. Teaming up members from such diverse musical backgrounds as Reverend and the makers, and Artic Monkeys, has suceeded in producing in my eyes a sort of ‘super hip hop indie group’. The kind of group which was needed in this current climate.
The opening track ‘Barcode’ gives a great insight into what the rest of the album has on offer, by exploring the debate over the governments ideas on ID cards, and claiming we are all ‘numbers’.
My personal favourite ‘Hit From The Morning Sun’ is definitely a stand out track. Dipping from a very laid back riff to up tempo female MC vocals. This album has so much to offer and such a diverse range that it’s hard to not just keep the album on repeat
Each track tackles current issues such as race, religion and the government, laced with atmospheric rap and catchy beats.
Regardless of music taste, I would recommend this album to anyone. Completely easy listening and influential.
