Saturday 4 July
Headliners Basement Jaxx are given a helping hand by an array of eclectic artists to kick start London’s favourite festival. Canadian band Metric, bring their multi award winning new wave sound to the green grass of Hyde Park whilst Yorkshire duo Skint & Demoralised – hailed by the Guardian as ‘New Band of The Day’, add their soul-influenced lyrical rhymes to the Wireless ambiance. Fresh from picking up Best Live Act and Best Album at the 2009 Irish Music Awards, electro act The Japanese Popstars will fire up metropolis revellers as the genre-hopping British rapper Master Shortie adds a cocktail of electronica, hip hop and indie into the mix. The Phenomenal Handclap Band shake things up with their old skool funky style.
Sunday 5 July
While Kanye West holds onto the reins, a flood of acts line up to play on Sunday including N-Dubz – their first UK festival appearance, and Tinchy Stryder. With their hit single ‘Number 1’ riding high at the top spot in this weeks chart, the MOBO Award winning trio along with rapper Tinchy Stryder are two thrilling additions to the Wireless stage. Representing the ladies on Sunday will be London based Zarif with her soul, funk and pop blended sound and the revered female rapper Lady Sovereign making a much anticipated return to the spotlight. Taking the baton for the men, UK rappers Chipmunk brings his unique edge to the Wireless audience while pop, drum & bass and reggae singer Steve Appleton adds some ‘dirty funk’ to proceedings. With five Austin Music Awards under their belt at last months SXSW 2009, Black and White Years make their first Wireless appearance this summer.
The Bella Union stage is back with another storming line up of artists. A Wireless collaboration with Bella Union label founder and Cocteau Twin’s Simon Raymonde, the Bella Union stage 2009 will feature Fanfarlo, Banjo or Freakout, Low Anthem, Peter Broderick, Beth Jeans Houghton and My Latest Novel with more still to be added. The unique and genuinely artist-run label for artists has had a successful track record of uncovering true gems and while this year’s line up offers recognisable acts, it will also be a chance to witness the cutting edge talents of the future.
