A raucous harmonica riffs over a steady handclap before the funky beat drops and Benjamin Darvill’s irrepressible vocals kick in. His voice loaded with grit, Darvill, aka Son of Dave, speak-sings his way through defiantly bluesy verses until the big chorus comes along, and it’s a good ‘un, simple and infectious enough to get down to on the first listen.
The polished production gives “Nike Town” an accessible pop sound, while the lyrics and vibe unmistakably belong to the modern-day bluesman that is Son of Dave. All in all this song is nothing more or less than a whole lot of fun; shameless, resolute fun, a little drop of fresh blues-pop joy that goes down like a Jack and Coke on a long summer’s evening.
