Having failed to make much of an impact in the UK the first time around, the Veronica’s are back with a re-release of their 2007 track ‘Untouched.’
It is perhaps a pop travesty that this single did not gain more recognition back then as it’s a catchy, well crafted slice of modern pop. Although it’s difficult to see ‘Untouched’ as much more than the musical equivalent of Holly Valance and Avril Lavigne’s lovechild, it does offer a slight edge over many chart busting hits out there at the moment. The composition as a whole is pitch perfect with the contrast of the stuttering vocals against the smooth echo of the strings. Sandwiched between the two is pulsating dance track which is sure to successfully position the track as a dance floor hit. This electro twist is the key ingredient that I’m sure will make the Veronica’s a hit at home and bring popular music right up to 2009.
Whilst the Aussie duo are aesthetically pleasing the rock and roll eye, ‘Untouched’ wouldn’t be too out of place in Eurovision, albeit a landslide winning entry. To a band keen to distance themselves from the pop genre, that’s a pretty damning comment, but the sooner they admit defeat the sooner we can all enjoy their music for what it is: well crafted mainstream music, with a bit more bite than your average girl group.
