Ok, hands up who forgot that English hippety-hopsters Stereo MCs were still around and making records? Me too, until this dropped through my letterbox a few days ago.
They’re best known for their breakthrough ‘Connected’, which spawned a smash single of the same name and ‘Step It Up’ and bagged them Brit awards for Best Group and Best Album. They became just as famous for taking nine years to release a follow up (2001’s Deep Down and Dirty) but to be fair, they were busy beavering away at remixes for the likes of Madonna and The Jungle Brothers.
3in3 sees three tracks from 2008’s Double Bubble – Show Your Light, Get On It and City Lights – remixed by Don Diablo, High Rankin, Have Mercy! and Dances With White Girls. All of the tracks hit the spot – it’s moody car alarm music garnished with emaciated frontman Rob B’s Ebeneezer Goode rapping – but special mention goes to Have Mercy!’s remix of Show Your Light. It’ll have listeners of a certain age breaking out their glowsticks and bottles of Vick’s VapoRub in no time at all.
Sounding weirdly old-school yet contemporary, listening to this took me back to the long, chemically-imbalanced nights in sweaty clubs of my youth. Recommended.
