Melanie Fiona – Give It To Me Right

Canadian singer-songwriter Melanie Fiona is probably best known for supporting pap-slapping rapper Kanye West during his 2008 European Tour, notable as she hadn’t released anything before this, her debut single.

‘Give It to Me Right’ is a moody affair, largely due to the sample of The Zombie’s Time Of The Season used throughout. Things are kept interesting thanks to a few catchy hooks and Melanie’s vocals. One thing’s for sure – she has a soulful R&B voice which marks her out from the swathes of identikit warblers one is exposed to nowadays.

If I had a niggle, it would be the use of the same Zombie’s sample throughout – a little more imagination in its use wouldn’t have gone amiss.

It’s a minor gripe, though, and certainly doesn’t spoil things. This is a solid debut from a promising talent.
