Announcing itself as a J. Mascis joint at the off via a blistering spurt of wah wah’d lead guitar that couldn’t have been played by anybody else, this new one from Dinosaur Jr’s forthcoming album Farm is immediately fun, tuneful and distinctly Jr, on the downside there’s nothing new or exciting about it. The guitar is loud, dirty and loose, the drums pound, and Mascis belts out the vocals in his trademark slacker drawl. The production is gloriously basic, leading to a raw, garage-y sound that belies a euphoric chorus hook the likes of which Dave Grohl would stab his gran for were he not such a nice guy. Nothing new as I said, but a full-pelt exercise in what these guys do best. Long may they rock.
