Killa Kela – Built Like A Amplifier

If you’ve not heard of Killa Kela, the beatboxer from West Sussex, do yourself a favour and head over to Youtube to check him out. This reviewer saw him supporting the Super Furry Animals a few years ago and he was astounding. It was with curiosity then that I slipped ‘Built Like An Amplifier’, from the forthcoming album of the same name into my cd player. I’d not kept up with his output and wondered how he would fare with a band.

Well, he’s doing just fine if this is anything to go by. It strays into Prodigy territory, so it’s hard not to make comparisons, but it’s a right old racket.

There’s loads of vocal hooks, frantic beats, bleepy synths, and distortion rounded off with a moody chorus. After hearing him beatbox, though, you’ll find yourself trying to determine which sounds were him and which were a sampler.

The boy’s done good though, and it will be interesting to see how the rest of the album sounds.
