A Word Like.Attack – Though We Aren’t Birds, We’re Still Given To Flight

True to their name, angry young men a word like.attack stick the boot in from the off on this EP, the opening riffage on “Good Luck In Your Future Endeavours” jagged, loud and heavy before the quiet-loud dynamics kick in, twinkly delayed guitars periodically giving way to sizeable power chords while empassioned shout-singing impresses itself over the top. It’s a well-crafted sound if nothing stunningly original and it sets the mood for the two tracks that follow, both enjoyably kinetic cuts from the same post-hardcore cloth.

Three songs is punchy enough to leave a lasting impression and the Southampton quintet save the best till last – “He’s Going Through a Lion Phase” is the most varied and exciting of the bunch, grabbing the attention with its stop-start riffs and drum machine interludes, not to mention a wrenching chorus movingly ripe with heartbroken indignation. Overall, these are three tracks delivered with conviction and fury and bound to win the band a few admirers.
