Yesterday’s Mercury Music Prize nominations have cemented Standon Calling’s reputation for showcasing the hottest new music the UK has to offer. Two of this year’s nominee’s, namely Friendly Fires and The Invisible will be playing live and direct at this award winning festival and two more (Glasvegas and Florence and the Machine) played last year. It begs the question, ‘who on our line-up will be nominated next year?’ Answers on a postcard!
Joining them on Planet Standon this year are electro-clash pioneers Ladytron who are currently writing new material for Christina Aguilara, afrobeat legend Femi Kuti, 60s space rockers Hawkwind (who celebrate their 40th anniversary at the festival), Tony Christie and the Sun Ra Arkestra. In addition The Rumble Strips make a welcome return, previewing new material from their Mark Ronson produced album 'Welcome to The Walk Alone' whilst the much lauded soul sensation VV BROWN beams down for an extra special set.
Other fantastic acts include Ed Harcourt, Easy Star All Stars, The Whip, Paloma Faith, Chrome Hoof, Micachu and The Shapes, Kap Bambino, When Saints Go Machine, Golden Silvers, Fanfarlo, We Have Band, Dead Kids, Invasion, Mothlite, Richard James, Portasound, Modernaire, Downtown Wolves, Jonny Woo Gay Bingo and many many more.
Cosmic Astronaut DJ's will include the likes of Dave Haslam, Riotous Rockers, Dan Beaumont (Disco Bloodbath), Eddy Temple-Morris (The Remix), Jagz Kooner and 65 Days of Static DJs. Heading up this space cadet troupe will be Greg Wilson on the Dollop Geo-Dome stage.
And elsewhere Standon Calling presents: Intergalactic dressing up competition, Stranger Than Paradise’s CCCP Cosmonaut Training Centre, Hot air ballooning, Rockaoke, Book Club Boutique tipi, Skandalous! presents: Intergalactic Red Light District, Underwater Disco, Beach Hut Karaoke, Heritage Arts’ Heliocentre live theatre experience, Extra-terrestrial experts from CERN, Astrological Blind Date with alien Cilla plus a host of fun filled festival shenanigans.
Alongside this, Standon have also revealed details for a special SUNDAY ONLY ticket for just £35. The Sunday line up is a three-day festival line-up in itself, featuring afrobeat legend Femi Kuti, man of steel Tony Christie and Easy Star All Stars who will be touring their new album. And that's only the start of what will be an amazing finale to Standon Calling 2009 – it will go out with a bang!
