“Lover, Killer” is a masterclass in not taking things too seriously from The Foxes, its terrific fun kicking in as it does with a three-chord riff that sounds straight out of the early noughties garage rock revival (as does the band’s name), Nigel Thomas’ vocals do the job and hold up the breezy girl-themed lyrics, and the playful soloing and handclaps post-chorus mark this as willfully trashy pop; throwaway frolics.
B-side “Headlock” is a more substantial offering in a way: impressive vocals that showcase Thomas’ range and lyrical panache, its downbeat sound counters quite nicely the rough and tumble of the A-side. A good couple of songs, though it remains to be seen whether The Foxes can hit the heights predicted for them by certain other publications.
