“One Man Woman” is the second album from Shena. Stepping away from the pop and easy listening of her solo female counterparts, Shena presents us with an album that has a real classic disco sound.
As you’d expect there are plenty of classic disco sounds with little sound bites and melodies that act as an audible time capsule. Accompanying it perfectly is Shena, her soulful voice both sultry and powerful at the same time giving real depth to the music.
There are plenty of grooves to boogie on down to on this album like single “Nasty Little Rumor”. As well as the more upbeat offerings like “My Fantasy” there is also the more demure “My Brave Face” which is akin to the countless love ballads churned out by soul divas.
The problem with this album is that it reminds you of the classic songs of the disco era so while it is nice to listen to something new, by halfway through you find yourself thinking about where you left your Disco Classics compilation. All the songs do do what they set out to do and would be a great backdrop to a girlie night out, however, it lacks “that” track that could stand up by itself and make this album more than just some background grooves at a party.
This is a good album, it’s lots of fun but Shena needs to put more a stamp on her music, perhaps she is too used to collaborating with the likes of Michael Gray and singing back-up on dance tracks, but this is her time to shine and she doesn’t quite manage it here.
