Moby – Mistake

Is he too old? Does anybody listen to techno? Is it over?

The eternal questions posed by Eminem in his infamous anti-Moby rant in hit single “Without Me” cannot help but linger over his latest single “Mistake” Though however much they cast a cloud of comedy over his career and however much they have threatened to destroy his credibility to a mush of embarrassment and clichés, he still manages to make songs at an un-nerving rate.

The latest, Mistake, taken from his new album “Wait for Me” begins by sounding like Lou Reed growling over a Killers track, all lonely and anxious, distracted and nervous, the authenticity in his vocals add a tempting texture to the opening of the track. Despite this, the song drifts off into a disappointing and expected repetition of the word “mistake”. A profound lexical choice that may just sum up what choosing to abandon exasperation for catchiness may have proved to be.
