J. Mascis and co know how to make a comeback. The trick is to be every bit as good, possibly better, than people remember you. Their terrific latest album Farm managed this hands-down and ‘Pieces’ is a typically belting cut from that record. Mascis’ guitar is as loud and inspired as ever and his hypnotic stoner melodising on winning form. There’s a pleasing lack of production values; everything’s refreshingly loud and raw. As you’d expect from the band, it’s a riff-driven song and the riffs are top drawer as always. This is straight-up rock delivered very well and a bristling antidote to today’s polished indie.
