Walk On is the second single by Stockton-on-tees seven piece Young Rebel Set. Released through the band's own label – Our Broadcast – Walk On follows hot on the heels of the band's debut single If I Was, which upon its August release saw the buzz that had been brewing on the band in the North East spill over into the rest of the UK, as the music press created a new genre for them, 'graft rock', and Radio 1 and XFM played the single repeatedly.
Breaking out of their own native scene where they've built a huge following, Young Rebel Set's songs are the sound of disenchanted, literate, working class young men in Northern Britain in 2009, looking for a means of escape through the music they love.
Fronted by Matty Chipchase, all seven members of the band have been friends since school and include two sets of brothers, further cementing the gang spirit. Though born out of a love of blue-collar, American songwriting like Springsteen and Dylan, through Matty's strong accent and localised narrative to the lyrics, these songs could come from nowhere else but the North East of England, adding to the band's collective charm and individuality.
Weaving tales of dead-end jobs and broken relationships around anthemic songs that blend the band's love of folk and punk, Young Rebel Set are conquering all in their path and the tracks on this single demonstrate why they're so hotly tipped for 2010.
Walk On centres around three hanging piano chords that build to the kind of rousing chorus you can easily imagine being sung back at the band during next year's festivals by ever growing crowds.
The b-sides to the single further showcase the depth to the band's songwriting canon. Borders is like Springsteen and The Pogues jamming Badlands in a rain swept shipping yard. WhilstYorkshire Bank – written before the collapse of Northern Rock – is a heartbreaking ballad that tells the tale of a man who has lost it all.
