GLISS ‘Devotion Implosion’ Release date: 2nd November 2009

“Like Interpol frozen by nitrogen, this is icicle-crackingly cool.” NME

Truly a mindf*ck, Gliss have compressed guitars and lured distraction and distortion into their midst to create a hazy morning- after trip. The blissfully fractured trio is so integrated in their roles that they frequently change instruments in their gigs and recordings. As a result there is no frontman, just a uniquely balanced trio of artists. Victoria, Martin and David all take an equal share in the creative process too. In fact Martin is quick to cite the band’s chemistry together as they made an album concerning loss, love and drugs. “You want to dig for gritty dangerous sounds combined with out there emotions.”

While the band painstakingly self-produced the album, the album’s mixer was Gareth Jones (Depeche Mode, Grizzly Bear, Goldfrapp, Interpol, Liars), who Martin contacted personally to help with the album. “He knew exactly where we were coming from sonically and how to communicate,” Martin nods. The band was also fortunate enough to secure Greg Calbi (Metric, The Hold Steady, Anthony and the Johnsons) to master the finished result. “Greg was the man to master this record,” asserts Martin. “His experience and vibe are astonishing.”

Tracks have the fractured brutality of My Bloody Valentine versus the foggy beauty of Goldfrapp and Lush. When Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan first caught them in their early beginnings, he took them on his European tour though the band had barely left L.A. Such a seductive sound pulls in so many different vibes. Think Krautrock meets The Liars. The buzzy bass psychocandy evokes a bruised Velvet Underground wrapped in a stutter-cool shell.

The band have been hit by some bad luck however. On their recent 3 month US tour, their tour van was plundered and their sacred gear half inched – a devastating loss for any band. An essential part of the scene in L.A., they have toured with The Raveonettes, Editors, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Smashing Pumpkins and We Are Scientists amongst others. They also have three dates in Germany in November where they are special guests to The Boxer Rebellion.

‘Devotion Implosion’ is an album of rock ‘n’ roll excess; but only if you dropped your guitar pedals in your Jack ‘n’ Coke, and then dried them in cashmere.

“a sexy, messy tangle of hedonism and late nights…sizzling shoegaze morphs into intoxicated guitars.” ARTROCKER
