After a recent line up change as well as change in band name, these four Kent based lads are releasing their debut Ep in the form of the seven track ‘We’ve Tried Nothing And We’re all Out Of Ideas’. Mixing raw indie melodies and some pop rhythms, these seven tunes use vocals, guitars, drums and the occasional cello to make their music upbeat and punchy while at the same time focusing on a variety of topics.
First to be heard is ‘TV’, a whinge against advertising wrapped up in an indie pop rhythm we have been missing from the industry. The Pharaohs spring to life with this style from the get go and never stop. Next up is ‘Squashed Against My Wall’, which is apparently about irritating moths; the slightly mellower yet musically talented ‘Space Is A Waste Of Space’ which has some remarkable guitar riffs; ‘Decorex’ includes a sing-a-long chorus; ‘If Columbus Had A Sat Nav, America Wouldn’t Exist’ may start with an acappella vocal but transforms into another masterpiece and then a mellower indie focused ‘Mosquito In A Bottle’. Lastly there is ‘Traffic’, the subject matter speaks for itself and is built around some effective melodies.
The Pharaohs are very random in their subject matter and this along with their consistent blend of vocal harmonies and indie pop melodies makes ‘We’ve Tried Nothing And We’re all Out Of Ideas’ something very enjoyable and interesting to listen to. This is the bands first attempt at an Ep and they have made some good progress in catching a few ears. With a lot of hard work and dedication, they have a talent they can create some very good music with.
