Midi Midis – Ambulance Cafe

Not since Stewart Lee and Richard Herring has there been a double act as worthwhile and exciting as MidiMidis. Whilst the latter duo replace cynicism with synthesisers and comedy with coolness, the result remains one of unruffled intelligence, based on the foundations of originality and never confined to the restrictions of the modern world.

Ambulance Café tickles pop with a metal hand and creates a whole new dimension where bubbles grimace and colours frown. Miserable and hopeful, the vocals skip with scattered elegance; shouting and scuffling, with every programmed beat equal to a violent punch-line.

Though they are thinner and sexier than Lee and Herring and probably three-hundred times more likely to lose themselves in commercial Britain, MidiMidis are a startling example of a buzz-band finally worth the double z.
